Epidemiology

Varies globally depending on genetics, environment, or exposure.

Etiology & Risk Factors

  • JAK2, CALR, or MPL mutations.

Clinical Symptoms

  • Often asymptomatic
  • thrombosis (DVT/Stroke) or atypical bleeding
  • erythromelalgia.

Clinical Approach

Diagnosis

  • Platelets > 450,000
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Mutation testing.

Management

  • Hydroxyurea
  • Aspirin.

Complications

  • Transformation to Acute Leukemia or Myelofibrosis.
