Definition

Inflammation of the optic nerve.

Epidemiology

Varies globally depending on genetics, environment, or exposure.

Etiology & Risk Factors

  • Multiple Sclerosis (most common), Idiopathic.

Clinical Symptoms

  • Unilateral pain with eye movement
  • blurry vision
  • relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD).

Clinical Approach

Diagnosis

  • Clinical
  • MRI Brain/Orbits.

Management

  • IV Corticosteroids.

Complications

  • Often recovers
  • but highly predictive of Multiple Sclerosis.
