Definition

Defect in the gastric or duodenal mucosa that extends through the muscularis mucosae.

Epidemiology

Lifetime prevalence of 5-10%.

Etiology & Risk Factors

  • Helicobacter pylori infection
  • NSAID use
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Clinical Symptoms

  • Epigastric pain
  • Nausea
  • Hematemesis
  • Melena

Clinical Approach

Diagnosis

  • Upper Endoscopy
  • H. pylori testing

Management

  • PPIs
  • H. pylori eradication (Triple/Quadruple therapy)

Complications

  • Perforation
  • Bleeding
  • Gastric outlet obstruction
