Definition
Malignant tumor of squamous epithelial cells in the epidermis.
Epidemiology
Second most common skin cancer.
Etiology & Risk Factors
- Cumulative UV exposure
- Immunosuppression (organ transplant recipients)
- Actinic keratosis (precursor lesion)
- HPV
- Chronic wounds/scars (Marjolin ulcer)
Clinical Symptoms
- Erythematous, hyperkeratotic (scaly), ulcerated papule or nodule
- Grows faster than BCC
- Often tender
Clinical Approach
Diagnosis
- Skin biopsy (keratin pearls on histology)
Management
- Surgical excision
- Mohs surgery
- Radiation (if poor surgical candidate)
Complications
- Local tissue destruction
- Metastasis (higher risk than BCC, especially on lips/ears)
