Epidemiology

Varies globally. Often age and lifestyle dependent.

Etiology & Risk Factors

  • Viral, Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep).

Clinical Symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • fever
  • odynophagia
  • tonsillar exudates.

Clinical Approach

Diagnosis

  • Rapid strep test
  • Throat culture.

Management

  • Penicillin/Amoxicillin (if Strep positive).

Complications

  • Peritonsillar abscess
  • Rheumatic fever.
