Clinical Significance
Enzyme found heavily in the liver (biliary ducts) and bone. Used to detect cholestatic liver disease or active bone remodeling.
Causes of High
- Biliary obstruction (Cholestasis)
- Bone disease (Paget's, Mets)
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Pregnancy (3rd trimester)
Causes of Low
- Hypophosphatasia
- Malnutrition
- Severe anemia
