Clinical Significance

Enzyme found heavily in the liver (biliary ducts) and bone. Used to detect cholestatic liver disease or active bone remodeling.

Causes of High

  • Biliary obstruction (Cholestasis)
  • Bone disease (Paget's, Mets)
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Pregnancy (3rd trimester)

Causes of Low

  • Hypophosphatasia
  • Malnutrition
  • Severe anemia
