Clinical Significance

Byproduct of protein catabolism. Toxic to the CNS. Elevated levels correlate roughly with the severity of hepatic encephalopathy.

Causes of High

  • Hepatic encephalopathy
  • Severe liver failure (Cirrhosis, Fulminant hepatitis)
  • Reye syndrome
  • GI bleeding with liver disease

Causes of Low

  • Normal finding
