Clinical Significance

Breakdown product of creatine phosphate in muscle. Highly specific indicator of renal function (glomerular filtration rate).

Causes of High

  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Dehydration
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • High meat intake

Causes of Low

  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Severe liver disease
  • Pregnancy
