Clinical Significance

Androgen synthesized almost exclusively by the adrenal cortex. Useful in evaluating virilization, hirsutism, and distinguishing adrenal from ovarian sources of excess androgen.

Causes of High

  • Adrenal tumors / carcinomas
  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Causes of Low

  • Adrenal insufficiency (Addison's)
  • Hypopituitarism
  • Long-term corticosteroid therapy
