Clinical Significance

Reflects total body iron stores. Most sensitive test for iron deficiency anemia, though it can be falsely elevated in inflammation.

Causes of High

  • Hemochromatosis
  • Chronic inflammation (Acute phase reactant)
  • Liver disease
  • Frequent blood transfusions

Causes of Low

  • Iron deficiency anemia
  • Severe bleeding
  • Poor dietary absorption
