Clinical Significance

Essential protein for clot formation (converted to fibrin by thrombin). Low levels in a bleeding patient (like in DIC) often require cryoprecipitate.

Causes of High

  • Acute inflammation (Acute phase reactant)
  • Pregnancy
  • Malignancy
  • Trauma

Causes of Low

  • DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation)
  • Severe liver disease
  • Massive transfusion
