G6PD Enzyme Activity

Hematology

Normal Reference Ranges

Adult

8.6 - 18.6 U/g Hb

Pediatric

8.6 - 18.6 U/g Hb

Clinical Significance

Measures glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme level. Low levels predispose red blood cells to oxidative stress and acute hemolytic anemia triggered by fava beans, infections, or drugs (e.g., primaquine, dapsone).

Causes of High

  • Reticulocytosis (acute phase of hemolysis)

Causes of Low

  • G6PD Deficiency (X-linked genetic mutation)
