Clinical Significance

Hormone regulating gastric acid secretion. Extremely elevated (>1000 pg/mL) is highly diagnostic of gastrinoma when gastric pH is < 2.0.

Causes of High

  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (Gastrinoma)
  • Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) use
  • Pernicious anemia (atrophic gastritis)
  • G-cell hyperplasia

Causes of Low

  • Antrectomy
  • Normal finding
