Clinical Significance

Pulsatile hormone from pituitary. Suppression (after oral glucose load) or stimulation (after insulin-induced hypoglycemia) tests are needed to confirm diagnosis.

Causes of High

  • Acromegaly / Gigantism
  • Stress, exercise, hypoglycemia
  • Starvation

Causes of Low

  • Pituitary dwarfism (children)
  • Adult growth hormone deficiency
  • Hypopituitarism
