Hormone produced by the placenta. Levels should double every 48-72 hours in a normal early intrauterine pregnancy.

Causes of High

  • Pregnancy
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Hydatidiform mole
  • Choriocarcinoma
  • Testicular cancer (Germ cell tumors)

Causes of Low

  • Failing pregnancy/Miscarriage (if levels fail to double appropriately)
