Hormone produced by the placenta. Levels should double every 48-72 hours in a normal early intrauterine pregnancy.
Causes of High
- Pregnancy
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Hydatidiform mole
- Choriocarcinoma
- Testicular cancer (Germ cell tumors)
Causes of Low
- Failing pregnancy/Miscarriage (if levels fail to double appropriately)
