Clinical Significance

Predominant immunoglobulin in mucosal secretions. Selective IgA deficiency is the most common primary immunodeficiency and puts patients at risk for anaphylaxis during blood transfusions.

Causes of High

  • Chronic infections
  • Liver disease / cirrhosis
  • IgA myeloma
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

Causes of Low

  • Selective IgA deficiency
  • Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID)
  • Immunosuppressive therapy
