Clinical Significance
Highly specific and sensitive marker for acute pancreatitis. Usually rises within 4-8 hours of onset and peaks at 24 hours.
Causes of High
- Acute Pancreatitis
- Pancreatic duct obstruction
- Renal failure (decreased clearance)
- Cholecystitis
Causes of Low
- Normal finding
- Chronic pancreatitis (late stage, burned out)
