Clinical Significance
Measures the concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of red blood cells. High MCHC suggests spherocytosis, as spheres have less surface area per volume than biconcave disks.
Causes of High
- Hereditary spherocytosis
- Severe burns
- Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
Causes of Low
- Severe iron deficiency anemia
- Thalassemia
