Normal Reference Ranges
Adult
7.5 - 11.5 fL
Pediatric
7.5 - 11.5 fL
Clinical Significance
Measures the average size of platelets. Larger platelets are usually younger, indicating rapid platelet turnover and destruction (like ITP) rather than production failure.
Causes of High
- Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) - rapid platelet turnover
- Massive hemorrhage
- B12/Folate deficiency
- Bernard-Soulier syndrome
Causes of Low
- Bone marrow failure
- Aplastic anemia
- Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome
