Clinical Significance

Essential for primary hemostasis. Count < 50k increases bleeding risk; < 10k increases risk of spontaneous severe hemorrhage.

Causes of High

  • Reactive (infection, bleeding)
  • Essential thrombocythemia
  • Splenectomy

Causes of Low

  • ITP / TTP
  • DIC
  • Cirrhosis/Splenomegaly
  • Bone marrow failure
  • Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)
