Clinical Significance

Glycoprotein produced by the prostate. Used as a tumor marker for screening and monitoring prostate cancer, though it is not cancer-specific.

Causes of High

  • Prostate cancer
  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Prostatitis
  • Recent urinary retention/catheterization
  • Recent ejaculation

Causes of Low

  • Post-prostatectomy (should be undetectable)
  • 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (Finasteride)
