Hematology

Normal Reference Ranges

Adult

0.5 - 1.5 %

Pediatric

0.5 - 2.0 %

Clinical Significance

Measures immature red blood cells. Crucial for distinguishing between hypoproliferative anemias (low count) and destructive/loss anemias (high count).

Causes of High

  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Acute blood loss
  • Response to therapy (Iron, B12, Folate replacement)

Causes of Low

  • Aplastic anemia
  • Untreated iron/B12 deficiency
  • Bone marrow suppression
  • Chronic kidney disease (low EPO)
